It’s not a huge surprise that Taiwanese breakfast was one of our most popular pop-ups. This month, we’re bringing it back in a different way, also showcasing a wider range of breakfast dishes that many outside of Taiwan haven’t seen. The “traditional” spread of youtiao, shaobing, and soy milk is only one category of the dishes available to start your day in Taiwan. Taiwan’s breakfast offerings are a mix of longstanding traditional items and newer crowd favorites influenced by outside sources. Take for example, a clear broth ginger beef soup, which you’ll find tucked in a decades-old establishment on a iykyk side street with a bowl of plain or braised pork rice. There, you’ll see kids enjoying the same soup that their parents enjoyed as children. In another part of town, you’re just as likely to find a BLT shaobing sandwich with, nonsensically and ever so characteristically, shitty American cheese slices. Our menu this month features these dishes in fun and creative ways, in ways that might already exist.
